OUR STORY

“Access to a dark night sky—to see and be inspired by the universe as it really is—should be a human right, not a luxury for the chosen few.”
– Chanda Prescod-Weinstein (Cosmologist and particle physicist)

The Spark

“There are no scientists that look like me…”

 “Science is boring…”

“I am not intelligent enough to be a scientist…”.

“Me? A scientist? Are you sure I can be a scientist?”

Too often, children are told – implicitly or explicitly – that science isn't for them. They see a narrow image of who a scientist is and don't envision themselves fitting in. These misconceptions limit children's potential, discouraging them from exploring their natural curiosity and pursuing fulfilling careers in STEM.

Witnessing this firsthand inspired me to create FunSci Books, a haven for curious minds where science is presented in an engaging, inclusive and accessible way. We break down barriers and foster a lifelong love of learning, proving that science can be fun, intriguing, and for everyone. At FunSci Books, we know that we are all born scientists, and we strive to nurture that innate curiosity through exploration and questioning.

Join us on this exciting journey and rediscover the joy of science!

“Do the research. Ask questions. Find someone doing what you are interested in! Be curious!”
- Katherine Johnson (mathematician, involved in the first and subsequent US spaceflights)

Who is behind FunSci Books?

Hi! My name is Victoria, but I usually go by Vicky or Loquita (this means “Little Crazy” in Spanish, and I think it’s my best nickname yet!).

I was born in Argentina, and I am a "hard-core scientist". What does this mean, you say? Well, it means I have over a decade of research experience in science research. From studying bacteria in wine, all the way to seeing fluorescent neurons in earth worms, I've seen it all!

My scientific life started in Argentina where I became a Biotechnologist and Molecular Geneticist thanks to the public university. These are some big words, I know, but put simply, I studied how we can modify day to day things to make them better for consumption and for the society as whole. Here is where I played around with wine and the bacteria found in them!

My scientific journey then continued in Montreal, Canada, where I did my second Master's in Neurobiology. I studied the development of the nervous system in an earth worm. And, believe it or not, my research could help understand how the human brain works (this is because humans have around 70% of the same genes as the worms!).

Throughout all this time, I continued encountering scientists that didn't know how to explain science without jargon (ie. fancy-scientific words). I also realized how this would deter kids from being interested in science. So I decided to use my science communication skills to start offering science animation birthday parties (FunSci was born!)

Seeing those kids light up sparked an idea: What if I could bridge the gap between complex science and curious minds? What if I could make science accessible and exciting for everyone?

And what better way to do this, than using comic books!

“All sorts of things can happen when you’re open to new ideas and playing around with things.”

The birth of FunSci Books

FunSci Books was born with a triple objective:

making science FUNINCLUSIVE and ACCESSIBLE.

We achieve this by crafting engaging stories that feature a diverse range of characters exploring scientific concepts. We use vibrant illustrations, hands-on activities, and relatable examples to break down complex terms and make learning exciting. Our books empower children to ask questions, experiment, and discover the world around them.

At FunSci Books, we believe science is for everyone. We encourage kids (and adults!) to embrace their curiosity and never be afraid to ask questions, even those that might seem silly.

Because true scientific discovery starts with wonder, and everyone has the potential to be a scientist.
